Wanna know why Bill Cipher is one of my favourite villains? Because unlike genetic villains who agree constantly, the show adds a new layer to him.

1. He's working for Gideon but there's hints of what he really wants.

2. Sock Oprea was clearly a comedic episode with Bill

3. A relationship between him and Ford.

4. His mutant allies.

5. The finale really shows how sadistic he is.

now compare that to Denzel Crocker or the Daleks or hell even Frollo (I'm sorry but right from the very beginning he's willing to murder children so the scene where he wants to burn the house down holds no big emotional impact.)

Hell, it's like Gaston; start off comedic but slowly we see the darker side to them.

Bill was great in that he used humour to disguise his depravity. From the outset he was weird and off kilter but he painted himself as a joker with dark sense of humour.

Even his relationship with Ford was brilliant in that he revealed who he was without showing off his dark nature.

In that way Bill is like a lot of real life villains and abusers; people who are the life of the party and also amoral monsters who hurt everyone around them
